The three most important things to do in a car accident include:
- make sure you are safe
- make sure the people around you are safe
- call the authorities
Do I need to call the police?
We always recommend to call the police when involved in a car accident. A lot of jurisdictions won’t come if there isn’t serious damage or serious injury, but you should still call the police because 9-1-1 calls are recorded. Even if the police aren’t going to come to the scene of the accident, it’s really important to call.
Should I describe the accident to the 9-1-1 operator?
It’s very helpful when we’re able to order the recorded 9-1-1 call. It helps us learn the details of the accident and can help the victim remember important facts that may otherwise be forgotten later. Often witnesses of the auto accident, even if they don’t stop, will call 9-1-1 and tell them what they saw.
