When you’re in a car accident, family and friends may make jokes about whiplash, but injuries to your neck and spine are no laughing matter. The forces in a car accident have a direct impact on our necks and spine – moving them with tremendous force and in unnatural directions.
These forces can cause many different kinds of injuries. Fractures to the bones in the neck and spine are the most feared of these injuries. Protection against movement at the scene is a key part of paramedic/ambulance treatment. For this reason, victims are often put on a board, immobilized, with their necks in braces until a doctor can confirm that their neck or spine isn’t broken. Those who sadly have broken necks and backs may have paralysis, limitations on movement, and may require extensive surgeries and treatments, including the placement of rods and other devices.
“Soft Tissue Injuries” are injuries to the muscles in our necks and backs. Aching, painful, limiting motion, these injuries are real and can make you miserable for several weeks or months while they heal. Treatment often includes rest, heat, muscle relaxants, physical therapy or chiropractic care.
Some serious injuries to the neck and spine may start out with similar symptoms to Soft Tissue Injuries, but they don’t improve with time or treatment. Evaluation by MRI or CT scan may show the discs in the back damaged or out of place, causing painful symptoms, as well as numbness and movement limitations. Some patients may require surgery or other treatments to address these symptoms.
