When Looking Both Ways Isn’t Enough

March 24, 2016 Ann Jacobs

Pedestrian CrossingA recent study from 2015 found that pedestrian death rose 10%.  Nearly 5,000 Americans are killed every year while walking.  In Wisconsin, pedestrian deaths are 8.4% of all deaths, a significant rise from 2005 when they comprised only 5.2%.

Why the increase?  There have been various reasons posed.  Perhaps because of smart phones, in-dash displays, and other driving distractions.  Perhaps because people are walking more.  Perhaps because people are driving more as the economy improves.

What we do know is that safety is key – even when being a pedestrian.  Don’t cross mid-block.  Use and obey traffic lights and crossing signs.  Practice crossing safely with your children.  Watch for pedestrians when driving in high-density areas.  Be aware of your surroundings – if schools are letting out, chances are there are kids crossing!

With spring arriving, we will see more people walking so let’s keep our eyes peeled for pedestrians!
